Attempting to evacuate casualties over uneven terrain or where normal vehicular access is not possible is a complete nightmare for all involved. It is slow, labour intensive, could involve at least five personnel if patient monitoring is required and potentially dangerous. The only alternative is to make use of a very costly resource, an Air Ambulance.
